Girls on Your Turntable
By Patty Fung (Kitchen Sisters intern)
After posting Bonnie Raitt’s playlist of girls on her turntable, we were excited by the feedback from so many of you who shared your own lists of favorite musicians, ranging across all spectrums of music. It’s been great listening to the variety of submissions that have come our way and to dabble in classic favorites.
On this page you’ll find a compilation of the artists that you’ve told us about. If you’re looking for some new music, you’ll find a variety of sources of amazing women below. We’ll be updating this list often as we receive suggestions, so keep checking back. We look forward to hearing more about the girls on your turntable!
Past Featured Playlists:Bonnie Raitt’s // Michael Ondaatje’s // Alice Waters’
NEW artists are up from the suggestions you have been sending in. Last Updated on 29 June 2011.
July 2011: Featured Artists We’ve Enjoyed Based on Your Feedback

Joan As Police Woman![]() Songs: “To Be Loved” “To America” |
Thank you to Rachel for contributing again to this month’s featured sounds. Rachel had suggested Mountain Man and we’ve enjoyed their vocals here at Kitchen Central. I had the chance to see Anna Ash perform at last month’s MAPP event in San Francisco. As my friends would describe, “She’s a mermaid.” Lastly, Davia and the interns were able to catch Joan As Police Woman in May at Cafe du Nord. A great performance and an amazing woman. Stay tuned for August 2011′s featured artists. You’ll find each month’s picks at the top of the playlist.

This list is fantastic! I am sure to keep coming back to this as a reference point. Women in music – a fine combination.

Patty! What a great job pulling all these inspiring women together in such a beautiful way. I’d like to add my dear favorite Tess Dunn. A brave new talented girl if ever there was one.

Is there room for “former girls”? if so, here are some thinking girls’ choices you may not have heard of
Syd Straw – a force of nature
Wesla Whitfield – no one does the standards like this lady
Maria Muldaur – Waitress in a Doughnut Shop
Susan Werner – Time Between Trains
Mini Farina – the fabulous, unique less well known sister of Joan Baez
Nina Simone – one of a kind, full of earthy passion
Annie Ross of Lambert Hendricks and Ross – check out Twisted
Two sister acts:
The Roaches – a trio of sisters unforgetable quirky, odd harmonies
Anna & Kate McGarrigle – great harmonies Kate was a huge loss
From Europe
Edith Piaf – French all the way
Lotte Lenya – fled Germany before WWII – Pirate Jenny and Lost in the Stars
Three who blazed the trails:
Ella Fitzgerald scat singing
Billie Holliday – especially Strange Fruit and Nature Boy
The late great Janis Joplin
and of course my childhood friend, Bonnie Raitt herself

Listening to AE-Aurelia Shrenker & Eva Primack — mostly acapella folk music (with some accordion and panduri) from Appalachia, Bulgaria, Georgia, Ukraine and more. Haunting and beautiful.
