Willie Nelson, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Dallas-born actress, Robin Wright Penn, along with some of the most wild and extraordinary tellers take us across Texas and share their own hidden kitchen stories in an hour of radio stories that comes alive with a deep sense of time and place.

Oil barrel barbeques, ice houses, cowboy kitchens, Christian kitchens, oystermen on Galveston Bay. The birth of the Frito, the birth of the 7-11, the birth of the Frozen Margarita, the first barbeque on the moon, the garage kitchens of the Vietnamese in Houston, cotton pickers' kitchens, biodiesel kitchens and so much more. All the big issues play out in these Texas kitchen stories -- oil, land, food, family, elders, work, war, immigration -- issues that touch the lives of listeners everywhere.

Full of first person stories, interviews, archival audio, voicemail messages, and laced with deep soulful Texas music by Willie Nelson, Flaco Jimenez, Archie Bell and the Drells,
Lightnin' Hopkins, Blind Lemon Jefferson, George Jones, Los Lonely Boys, Conjunto Bernal, Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, Tex Czech polka bands and Lydia Mendoza. Shimmering musical transitions and sonic beds for this 2007 HIDDEN KITCHENS SPECIAL are provided by steel guitar wonder, Cindy Cashdollar. She grew up on a raw milk dairy farm in Woodstock, so you know she rocks!
