Wicked Jazz Sounds from Japan

If you consider Jazz concerts highbrow and solemn affairs, Japanese performer Hiromi Uehara could well change your mind! Performing at Yoshi’s jazz club in San Francisco last Thursday through Sunday, the petite thirty-something played the piano with a contagious punk like attitude and wild enjoyment.

Hiromi is only 31 but having started performing at age 14, she has many years of practice under her belt. In the video below she tells how she is recording an album every decade creating time capsules of herself through her music.

Still in her twenties at the time of the recording of her album, Hiromi said she wanted to capture her energetic, youthful and even immature way she has in life. “I will never be playing like I play right now in 10 years!” She laughed.

She won’t but we can’t wait to see her next steps!

To really catch her energy check this video of her performing in 2010 at the Jazz in Marciac in France.
