Joan As Police Woman

Last night, we here at the Kitchen Sisters caught Joan As Police Woman’s show at San Francisco’s CafĂ© du Nord. Suffice it to say, we were blown away. Dressed in a slashed leather catsuit—”I wore my leather for you, San Francisco,” she cooed to the crowd—she had that kind of intimate stage presence where you forget, for a moment, that you are in a room full of other people. She played a mix of punchy, edgy songs with deep bass tones and soft, soulful and sultry songs. We can’t recreate it for you, but here’s the music video of “The Magic,” the hit song off her most recent album, “The Deep Field.”

What do you think it’s about? Here’s Joan talking about the meaning behind the song:

A little bit about Joan: Joan Wasser hails from Connecticut and began her musical career as a violinist, playing with the Boston University Symphony Orchestra, before she broke into the indie rock scene. Before she created Joan As Police Woman in 2002, Joan played with the Dambuilders and Antony and the Johnsons, among many others. She’s collaborated with Lou Reed, Nick Cave, Elton John, Rufus Wainwright, David Sylvian, Scissor Sisters, Joseph Arthur, Sheryl Crowe…
